Friend -
Recently, I was stunned by a story about the medical treatment of Black Americans who have high blood pressure. In short, the report said that, since the 1990s, high blood pressure drugs given to Black patients were different from those given to people of other races. Not surprisingly, this practice was wrong and harmful.
It may seem like this is out of PowerPAC’s lane. But stories like this are exactly why we do what we do. When we fight for diverse representation in our civic halls, from city councils to the White House, we are creating visibility for all of us. Opportunity doesn’t knock on the doors of the invisible. Disparities like this don’t always mean that the people at the table were ill-intentioned. However, it does often mean that the right people do not have a seat. It also shows that we can’t overcome systemic disparity without changing the reasons that led us to the table in the first place. In this specific case, the multiple factors that contribute to racial and ethnic health disparities.
Representation is meaningful. Whether it’s on the factory floor or the legislative floor, it matters that each of us has the opportunity to see ourselves represented in places of leadership. When our elected officials reflect the diversity of America, the effects will show up as improvements in all areas of our lives.
It’s why what we do at PowerPAC is so important. Your support helps make certain that all of us are seen.
