Dear John,
Yesterday, our country reflected on the sacrifice and bravery of those who have served and protected this nation. Our veterans deserve an America that recognizes and respects their sacrifices and does everything in its power to repay them. Unfortunately, as it pertains to suicide, we are not yet living up to that standard. Each year, more than 6,000 veterans die by suicide in the United States. Of these deaths, more than two-thirds are firearm suicides.
As a military spouse, I recognize that firearms are an essential part of military culture. However, the lethal role that guns play in suicide among veterans, military service members, and their families cannot be brushed aside in this discussion.
The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence has released a new report entitled "Prevent Firearm Suicide: Service Members and Veterans" ([link removed]) which highlights the firearm suicide epidemic in the military community and proposes life-saving solutions. We hope that this report will help to end the stigma around firearm suicide, as well as emphasize policies and solutions that will reduce this epidemic which is responsible for 60% of American gun deaths.
This issue of firearm suicide amongst service members and veterans deserves the attention of every lawmaker, advocate, and citizen. Our veterans deserve that and so much more.
