Let’s Do This…Together!
During an online gathering with supporters this afternoon, we shared how Our Children’s Trust will count down the days to this historic trial one year from now. If you missed our event, don’t worry - we will post a recording to our social media soon! You’ll also have many additional opportunities to join us as we have a full year of trial prep events and activities in the works.
Every month, from now until February 6, 2023, we’ll host online events, livestreams, social media campaigns, and other interactive opportunities for our community to join us as we prepare for trial. Be sure to subscribe to our events calendar here ([link removed]) and follow us on social media (click the little icons below our logo below!) to hear about these exciting ways to learn more about the case and what to expect at trial. You can also check out the countdown clock on our Youth v Gov website here ([link removed]) ; be sure to bookmark this site as this will become our headquarters for trial updates, especially as we get closer to next February!
Early next year, we will also be sure to share how you can watch, listen to, or otherwise get updates on each day of trial proceedings, including in-person (we hope!) and online events and community mobilizations to support the 16 youth plaintiffs as they protect their constitutional rights in Montana and make history in the fight for climate justice in America.
“Going to trial means a chance for me and my fellow plaintiffs to have our climate injuries recognized and a solution realized. It means our voices are actually being heard by the courts, the government, the people who serve to protect us as citizens and Montana’s youth. Knowing that we have the dates for the first youth constitutional climate case ever, I feel hopeful that finally our government may begin to serve our best interest.”
- Grace, Held v. State of Montana youth plaintiff
A Huge Moment for Climate Justice
With scheduled dates for trial, Held v. State of Montana ([link removed]) becomes the first constitutional climate trial AND the first children’s climate trial in the history of the United States. During trial, these young Montanans will present evidence in open court proving that, by supporting a fossil fuel-driven energy system, the state of Montana causes and contributes to dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions and therefore is responsible for the climate-related injuries the youth suffer in violation of their rights under the Montana Constitution.
This trial is an enormous step toward protecting children’s rights to a safe climate, not only in Montana but across the United States and around the world!
