Dear Comrade,
Our new steering committee was elected at our January meeting and has been hard at work already! We have big goals for this upcoming year locally and across the country. Join us for an event this month-we have a future to win!
DSA for the Miners: On April 1, 2021, roughly 1,100 coal miners with the United Mineworkers of America at Warrior Met Coal in Brookwood, Alabama, went on an unfair labor practices strike over Warrior Met’s refusal to negotiate a contract renewal in good faith. The miners have been on strike for 10 months now, making this the longest strike in Alabama history. On January 26, 2022, the miners crossed Day 300 of the strike. Birmingham DSA is holding a solidarity event and virtual fundraiser tomorrow, Tuesday February 8th at 7 pm and if you are able, please also consider donating to the miners here, whether or not you can attend the event.
Political Education Book Club: Come join us on Thursday, February 17th at 7 pm as we discuss the Combahee River Collective statement as part of our ongoing political education series! You can read the statement here for free.
Community Talk Back: Join the Summit County Historical Society on Saturday, February 19th at 12:30 pm for a free virtual event to celebrate the history and accomplishments of African Americans in Akron and Summit County. Local historian and Society director emeritus, Dave Lieberth, will give a history overview followed by moderator, Pastor Dr. David Nelson, introducing our panelists.
General Meeting: Join us Wednesday, February 23rd at 7 pm for updates on national and local happenings and learn what's new for Akron DSA in 2022!
Writing Workshop: Take a step beyond posting on social! If you’d like to get your voice out in the community and need help or dedicated time, join us Sunday, February 13th at 2 pm in writing letters to the editor. We will assist each other in brainstorming and editing, and we can use our letters for the ADSA blog. No prior experience necessary!
Ohio Labor History Event: Join Akron DSA, Mahoning Valley DSA, and Northwest Ohio DSA for a very special panel discussion on Ohio labor history on Sunday, February 27th at 7 pm. We are excited to hear about the struggles of our comrades from the past from Professor John Tully, Thomas Sabatini (Kent State University), and Kevin Blair (Northwest OH DSA). The panel will be moderated by Heather Hillenbrand (Akron DSA, SEIU Local 1) and we will have time for audience questions. By learning from our past and connecting these lessons to current struggles we can rebuild a fighting labor movement in Ohio!
Solidarity forever and see you on Zoom!
