John,
Did you know that at the end of 2021, women’s workforce participation was
at the same level it was in the 1980s? It’s crazy to me that the last time
it was this low, I was in middle school.
The rate of women in the workforce has been decreasing since 2009, and
while it’s further decreased with the pandemic, COVID-19 is not the root
cause for so many women leaving their careers.
Our country has never made investments in two of the things working
families need to be successful: paid leave and affordable child care.
As a single, working mom of three school aged kids, I understand the
pressures facing families right now. Not too long ago my daughter Betsy
was enrolled in preschool at UC Irvine where I worked. It sounds crazy,
but her preschool tuition cost more than undergrad tuition. That’s just
not doable for many families.
Enabling women who want to work outside the home to be a part of our
workforce isn’t just a ‘women’s issue.’ It’s critical to the strength,
security, and competitiveness of our economy.
I’ve been advocating for Congress to step up and make real investments in
families for months—[ [link removed] ]we must lower the cost of child care and create a
federal paid leave policy so that people can take time away from work when
they have a new child or need to care for a sick loved one.
For too long, the issues of women and families have been put on the
backburner. [ [link removed] ]Show your support for legislation that will address the
high cost of child care and allow workers to take paid leave by signing my
petition.
