Dear John:

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. We've got great educational resources below, so that you can be part of raising that awareness. We also have a reminder about our new support publication for grandparents, and an urgent "Take Action" for those who live--or have friends or family who live--in Florida.

Support

ICYMI: A new publication for grandparents!

With Valentine's Day coming up, we've got love on our minds. And for many people, the love between grandparents and grandchildren is special and sacred. That relationship can deepen when a child comes out to a grandparent, especially if everyone leads with love, the PFLAG way.

Late last year, PFLAG National, in partnership with our friends at SAGE, released, "Supporting Your LGBTQ+ Grandchild," a new publication (available in both English and Spanish) that provides education and support to grandparents of LGBTQ+ kids. With a foreword by longtime PFLAG friend and supporter Dear Abby, "Supporting Your LGBTQ+ Grandchild" is a must-read for any grandparent looking to learn more about how to support LGBTQ+ grandkids...or looking for support for themselves.

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Ally for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Here are some resources to help you learn more, and then help raise awareness.

  1. Learn: Learn more about National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (#NBHAAD) from HIV.gov. Take a look at this NIH resource about NBHAAD and learn more about the disproportionate rate of HIV infections that Black communities face in the USA.
  2. Watch: Watch HIV.gov’s video African Americans and AIDS: By The Numbers. Be sure to re-watch our PFLAG Academy Online session about LGBTQ+ inclusive sexual education to stay mindful of safe sex practices.
  3. Share: Check out this social media toolkit from the CDC for some ideas about how to use your social media to raise awareness. Follow HIV.gov on social media, including on Twitter and Facebook.

Advocacy

Help Florida oppose censorship: Reach your Florida friends today

All eyes are on Florida’s state legislature as they take up the so-called “Stop WOKE Act” (HB 7/SB 148). This bill is pure censorship, mislabeled as nondiscrimination, and affects public school K-20 and workplaces, seeking to silence teachers and employers and erase important, honest education. Learn more about the harms of HB7.

Tomorrow, the Florida House Education and Senate Rules Committees will vote on this bill, so it is time to make our voices heard.

If you are in Florida--or if you are not there, but have friends or family who are, encourage them to take action--take action with our friends at Equality Florida, urgently. Together we can stop HB7!

Something to Talk About...Live!

"Another Day, Another Book Ban"

The American Library Association estimates that more than 80% of book challenges go unreported and receive no media coverage. Yet somehow, it seems like we can’t go a day without hearing about another book ban. That’s why we’re asking PFLAG members and supporters to #ReadWithLove.

Join us this Thursday, February 10th at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT for Something To Talk About Live, where we will be discussing Michael Arceneaux’s article in The Week, “Book banning is back, and it's targeting Black folks“ with award-winning comic book writer, filmmaker, journalist, and educator David F. Walker (Naomi; The Life of Frederick Douglass: A Graphic Narrative of a Slave's Journey from Bondage to Freedom).

You can watch live on FacebookYouTubeLinkedIn, or Twitter.
