Black History Month gives us a chance to reflect on the movements that changed our country for the better, shows us the progress we can still make, and gives us an opportunity to celebrate Black history. And Kansas holds a significant place in our country's Black history.

More than 60 years ago, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision after hearing the historic Brown vs. Board of Education case. This was a monumental case in our country's fight against segregation -- and it happened right here in Kansas.

While Brown v. Board of Education didn't end racial discrimination in our country, it ignited a call for change – and serves as an important reminder of all the work we have left to do. Every Kansan deserves the same opportunities as their neighbor.

During this Black History Month, I invite you to join me in making a commitment: A commitment to honor the legacies of those who fought during the Civil Rights Movement. To learn how we can continue their work today by listening and lifting up Black voices.
