Friend,

George Washington Carver once wrote, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”

As we celebrate Black History Month, I reflect on the great strides our country has made in unlocking that golden door of freedom by expanding opportunity in education for Black students and recognize the long way still to go in closing the racial gaps that persist today.

I have dedicated my life to lifting up our youth, especially those who are being left behind – whether as a teacher, as a principal, or as the U.S. Secretary of Education – because my public school teachers did so much for me when I was young. I am profoundly grateful to the educators working each day to ensure an excellent education for every child in Maryland and to close gaps in opportunity.

However, there are still racial gaps in the education system today. Black History Month is an opportunity to not only reflect on the leaders and policies who have made such a difference in the lives of Black students, but also to think about how we can do even more to deliver educational equity.

The majority of students in our public schools today are students of color. Our state's future depends on ensuring educational opportunity for all students regardless of race and regardless of zip code. I am prepared to create a more equitable Maryland for us all, but I need your help to do it. If you have a moment, could you pitch in $50, $25, or even $10 to support our campaign for governor?

We cannot leave anyone behind, friend. I was lucky to have public school teachers who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to get where I am today. The care, faith, and love of public school educators helped me to survive the trauma of losing both of my parents by the time I was twelve and to recover from getting kicked out of high school as a teenager when I had lost my way. School literally saved my life. However, most students don’t get the same second chance I did. That’s why I believe it’s time to put a teacher in the governor’s seat. If you agree, will you give today to help me make a difference in our state?
