ADL invites you to join us in celebrating February as Black History Month, a national commemoration of the achievements of Black Americans and a recognition of the central role of the Black experience in our shared history.
In classrooms and across communities, Black History Month is an excellent time to explore the Black experience — including the history, culture and achievements of Black people, the injustice they face and how that injustice has been and continues to be confronted and overcome.
At ADL, we will never stop reflecting and working on our commitment as an organization to securing justice and fair treatment for all. We need to think about civil rights not just as a history lesson, but as history being made today and every day.
So, we are thrilled to host two important educational events in honor of Black History Month:

Join best-selling author Jacqueline Woodson at our next Read Aloud

“Changing the World One Word at a Time” event on Feb 9 at 4pm ET/1pm PT. Bring the young people in your life or come yourself to our very special online read aloud and conversation with her.
“When you see other people on the page and you learn their stories, you can empathize; you gain an understanding and your world becomes bigger and better.”

Woodson is the author of dozens of books for young readers and the recipient of a 2020 MacArthur Fellowship, the National Book Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, a Newbery Honor, and the NAACP Image Award. She was also the 2018–2019 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

Join ADL for an

“Allies Coming Together” online event with filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry to celebrate his Oscar-winning short film Hair Love on Feb. 24 at Noon ET/9 am PT. Cherry is a writer, director, producer and former NFL wide receiver.
This virtual event is designed for 4th-12th graders wanting to build more inclusive space and will feature the viewing of Hair Love and a dialogue between students from ADL’s No Place for Hate(R) coalition and Cherry. No Place for Hate teaches and inspires 1.3 million students each year to fight bias, bullying and bigotry in our schools.

We invite educators to register for this virtual event to broadcast in their classrooms. You and the young people in your life are also invited to join in. Closed captioning and Spanish translation will be provided. An approved No Place for Hate activity will be shared with participating schools after the event to extend and inspire more change-making.
