We wanted to share this new video of ours real quick. It’s from Rebecca Wood — a health care advocate, mother, and dear friend — and her daughter, Charlie.
Over their journey as health care advocates, Rebecca and Charlie have become friends with Speaker Pelosi. And now they’re asking Pelosi directly to let Medicare for All move forward in the House.
They recorded their request specifically for our rally in San Francisco last weekend and wanted to make sure all of you had a chance to see it too. You can watch it here. And then we need you to share it on social media. Her story — and the message for Speaker Pelosi — is an important one.
We hope you’ll be able to watch and share this video today. Rebecca has long been a champion for health care justice, and her story is far from the only one of its kind.
Her daughter, Charlie, was born at 26 weeks in critical condition and spent the next three months in the NICU. As Rebecca says, Charlie’s birth was a pre-existing condition. Without the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Charlie would have been uninsurable.
So Rebecca joined the fight against the GOP Tax Scam in 2017, and spoke in defense of the ACA in Congress. But even with insurance, Rebecca was often forced to make tough choices between her own health care and Charlie’s.
After postponing a much-needed root canal for herself, an infection spread through her entire mouth, costing her all of her teeth and parts of her jaw. Even though the ACA was saved, Rebecca still couldn’t afford to take care of her daughter AND herself at the same time.
This is the true cost of America’s broken health care system. Families are forced to choose one operation over another; risk their lives to ration insulin because they can’t afford any more; or spend money on health care instead of putting food on the table.
It’s completely unnecessary. And it nearly cost Rebecca and Charlie everything. We can and must do better.
Under a Medicare for All system, Rebecca and Charlie would have gotten the care they needed, when they needed it, with no strings attached. That is why we fight. It’s why Rebecca fights. And it’s why so many people in our movement are fighting every day.
A better world is possible.
In solidarity,
