It is Black History Month, and I am celebrating the accomplishments of hardworking Black Americans like John. He came to the Springfield Urban League because he did not know where to turn.

John had fallen on hard times and found himself and his family, including his five children, living in shelters. He was able to find “affordable” housing but needed a good job to pay the rent. He wanted a stable home and future. 

The Urban League stepped in and helped John with life-skills training, prepare his resume, and practice interviewing. While waiting, he earned four hospitality certifications! Soon, he had a job with a large company making a decent annual salary. 

John proudly said, “Now, I’m not just viewed as an exceptional employee but also as a good father and husband.”
