Friend: Even on days when the global refugee crisis doesn't make headlines, it is still an emergency—and still endangers the lives of the people we help around the world.
Refugees and migrants in Libya’s capital, for example, were targeted by violent mass arrests in October, tripling the number of people detained. Many people were held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions without access to sufficient food, water, shelter, or medical care.
In Shara Zawiya detention center, which can normally accommodate up to 250 people, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team witnessed more than 550 women and children crammed into the cells, including pregnant women and newborn babies. The situation became more dire last month when peaceful demonstrations calling on Libyan authorities to address these horrific conditions were met with violence and further mass incarceration.
For years MSF has denounced the abhorrent treatment of displaced people in Libya and since 2016, has provided basic health care and mental health support to people in detention centers in the country’s capital.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
