** After-Action Report: Victory! Thank you for your calls to the Assembly
------------------------------------------------------------
One week ago, HJTA alerted all its supporters to call the members of the Assembly to urge a “No” vote on two bills that would have resulted in tax hikes and harm to property rights.
Thank you for calling! We’re very pleased to report that both bills were pulled from the floor without a vote, after their authors concluded that they would go down in a humiliating defeat. Happily, it is now past the deadline for these two bills to advance this year
AB 1400 – Assembly Bill 1400 would have eliminated private health insurance in California and replaced it with government-controlled health insurance at an estimated cost to taxpayers of $365.5 billion per year – more than the current state budget for education, health care, prisons, transportation, the courts, and every other state program combined.
AB 854 – Assembly Bill 854 was an attack on property owners that would have prohibited the buyers of rent-controlled apartment buildings from exiting the rental housing business, even if they were losing money, until they had owned the building for at least five years.
Of course, as you know, the legislature has many tricks for bringing bad bills back to life. We’ll be watching, and we’ll keep you informed.
Thank you for your help, and thank you for being a valued member of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association! We greatly appreciate you.
Sincerely,
Jon Coupal
President, HJTA
