Dear John,The deadline to register to vote is in just two weeks. My friend Kate assumed she was registered to vote. She pays council tax, she's lived in the same place for many years, she likes to think she's politically engaged. But Kate was actually one of the 9 million people in this country who were not correctly registered. As of September, nearly 1 in 5 voters were not registered. That’s why we’ve launched StartVoting.org. It’s an easy and quick way to register or apply for a postal vote. It only takes five minutes. All you need is your address and your National Insurance number. Do it now, and be sure you can vote this December. We want everyone to participate in this election. But people like Boris Johnson and Farage would rather you stayed home on 12 December. Even if you voted in the last election, even if you’re 99% sure it’s done, even if you’re like Kate and you think you’re registered, it’s worth taking five minutes to make sure. It doesn’t matter if you register twice. It’s better to waste five minutes than be turned away from the polling station.
If Kate hadn’t checked, she wouldn’t have had a say on issues that matter to her, like climate change, the NHS and education. It could be our only say on Johnson’s Brexit. If there’s a chance any of your friends, family or acquaintances might not be registered to vote, please share StartVoting.org as far and wide as you can. Make sure everyone you know is registered. Let them know that if they aren’t registered by November 26, they’ll be denied a vote in one of the most significant elections for a generation. This is a snap election. People haven’t been given a lot of time to register. I think it’s unacceptable that millions of people could be denied a vote. In the time it’s taken to read this, you could be registered. So please, help us make certain everyone has a voice. Best wishes, Cary Mitchell P.S. Even if you feel sure you’ve registered to vote, I really recommend registering again. It doesn’t matter if you register twice in the same place and at the same address. There’s no way to look-up whether you’re registered, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. So while you’re here, visit StartVoting.org and register now!
