The Fresno County Democratic Party can add your candidacy posts on our social media and website. We want informational items about your campaign and not blatant requests for donations. Items will not be posted that denigrate another Democrat.

Until our endorsement process is completed, we will include the following disclaimer: “The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.”

After the endorsement process, only postings for endorsed candidates will be accepted.

Georgeanne White is taking over as Fresno’s city manager as Mayor Jerry Dyer had been on the job for just more than a year before this unexpected announcement. Outgoing city manager Tommy Esqueda was frequently at odds with the City Council, mostly finding support for his interpretation of Dyer's agenda in City Council Members Garry Bredefeld and Mike Karbassi.

That strained relationship might be unlikely to change under the new manager as White was first brought to Fresno City Hall as Bredefeled’s chief of staff during his first stint on the City Council in the late 1990s.

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee
has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Annalisa Perea is one of many qualified Democratic candidates running for the Fresno City Council in the upcoming election. Perea is currently a trustee of the State Center Community College District Board, an office she was elected to in 2018. She represents the Tower District, Downtown Fresno, southeast Fresno and west of Highway 99.

Perea is also a business owner and an urban planner in the private sector, where she works extensively on local environmental, economic and community development issues for cities throughout California.

Due to Covid-19 safety concerns, the FEC’s planned Feb. 8–9 San Diego conference will instead take place online via Zoom. During this fully interactive virtual conference, FEC commissioners and staff will provide two days of in-depth training on the federal campaign finance rules relevant to different types of committees.

Attendees will also get expert tips and best practices, learn how to report different types of financial activity and hear commissioner commentary on recent developments in the law.

This is the last two-day conference of the 2021–22 election cycle, so don’t miss your chance to learn campaign finance law directly from the agency that administers it. Visit the website ([link removed]) to register today!

Fresno Unified Trustee Terry Slatic has always liked to make noise. His current chosen accusation is the claim that Fresno Unified had a consistent pattern of failing to inform teachers when “problem students” are transferred into their classrooms. A months-long investigation found no evidence of any such systemic problem.

So the next time Slatic stages an angry filibuster during regular school board meetings about his most recent claim of conspiracy, remember how the last one ended.

Cops here in Fresno County will now start with a minimum salary of nearly $60,000 with the higher ends of the pay scale receiving a $20,000 increase, which makes them the highest paid force in the Central Valley. This is not exactly surprising in a city that just elected the long-serving chief of police to the mayor’s office, despite the Fresno Police Department having a spotty record during his tenure.

Of course, base pay is just the beginning of how our community sponsors the officers. Then there is overtime, with cops sometimes doubling their salary. And there is the practice of organizations or businesses who can hire uniformed cops and city patrol cars to act as security-for-pay. Police show up with guns at their hips when City Council members have community meetings with their constituents.

Fresno has decided to bet big on the idea that giving more money to the police will improve the lives of the people who live in Fresno. Now we will have to sit back and watch carefully to see what Chief Paco Balderrama accomplishes with these resources.

With the new strain still surging, California is extending the mandatehttps://ktla.com/news/california/california-reimposing-indoor-mask-mandate-amid-sharp-increase-in-covid-cases/that masks be worn in all indoor public settings—regardless of Covid-19 vaccination status—through Feb. 15.

Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said, “Frankly, hospital capacity is still pressed and challenged. We see that in parts of Southern California, Riverside, San Bernardino, Mono, Inyo County, we see it around the Central Valley and San Joaquin Valley, and in the northernmost parts of our state.”

“Even a 10% increase in indoor masking can reduce case transmission significantly,” Ghaly said.

The pandemic and the isolation it brings has drastically accelerated a long-term trend of lowering community engagement as online media replaces in person interaction.

Many of the problems we face, from environmental protection, to race relations require solutions that involve wholesale reshaping of our community thought processes. When people are not engaged with the government this all becomes even more difficult.

California is putting $3 billion toward making our neighborhood schools a center of this reformation. The community school strategy takes an integrated approach to students’ academic, health and social-emotional needs by making connections with an array of government and community services and by building trusting relationships with students and families. This first wave of investment will cover 3,000–4,000 schools; the majority of federal Title 1 low-income schools in California.

This new program comes on top of other reforms California has recently passed, including the following:
* An expanded day and seven-week summer school for all low-income elementary students
* The rollout of transitional kindergarten for all four-year-olds
* A $4 billion commitment to provide mental health services for all students
* Free universal lunches and breakfasts for all pre-K to 12 students
* Tens of millions of dollars in staff development funding
