Over the weekend, Donald Trump repeated the Big Lie that Mike Pence could have overturned the results of the 2020 election, and he urged his supporters to mount nationwide protests if the prosecutors in Georgia, the New York Attorney General and Manhattan District Attorney’s offices investigating him “do anything illegal.”

He also claimed he might pardon those who attacked the Capitol if he were elected for a second term.

If you’re wondering how Trump can issue these statements, pay for staff, and travel the country as he did for a rally in Texas this weekend, you’re probably thinking it’s not on his dime. And you’d be right.

This year, he’s endorsed Republicans in 12 gubernatorial races, 15 Senate races, and 32 House races, not to mention dozens of state legislative and executive offices, including critical roles like secretaries of state in Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan.

The 2022 midterms are shaping up now, and Republicans in all of the most consequential races already have Trump in their corner — as he further incites his supporters to angry protest and delegitimizes the 2024 presidential election he intends to steal.

The honest truth is that our democracy is still on the brink. Trump will say and do anything not only to put himself at a political advantage for 2024, but also to protect his business interests like the Trump Organization from state or federal investigation.
