Happy Black History Month!
This month we celebrate Black History Month to lift up the history and importance of Black life in our country and to recommit ourselves to fighting for equity, equality, and inclusion and to teaching honest history.
As part of the celebration of Black History Month, AFT’s Share My Lesson has put together substantial resources for classrooms that include a curated collection of activities, blogs, webinars and more. The resources include everything you need to teach about key events and individuals whose accomplishments continue to influence, inspire, and shape American society and the world today.
In addition, we’ve put together a great set of resources on the CFT website that may be of interest to educators in the classroom, unions, and families and communities.
Be sure to take time this month to celebrate Black history in our schools and workplaces. And while we celebrate Black History Month in February, we continue our racial and social justice work throughout the year through our efforts and advocacy, including our upcoming Leadership Conference in March, with the theme Organizing for Racial and Social Justice in Education.
Progress on restoring supplemental paid sick leave
Thanks again to everyone who has signed the CFT letter to their elected representatives in Sacramento, urging them to restore paid sick leave in California. Restoring the leave during the pandemic is critical to ensure that our schools can remain safely open.
Word coming out of Sacramento is that momentum is growing to restore the supplemental paid sick leave program, with a possible vote in the Legislature next week. Let’s keep the pressure on. Take a moment to send a letter now and urge your colleagues to do so as well.
AFT 2121 faculty and students fight back against proposed cuts
The City College of San Francisco is once again facing devastating layoffs and budgetary cuts that could potentially decimate the college. Recently the administration announced that fifty full time faculty members are expected to be laid off at the end of this semester, with many more part-time faculty jobs at risk.
The faculty of AFT 2121, labor, and student allies are fighting back against the proposed cuts. As part of their ongoing campaign to defend CCSF, they’ve produced three incredible videos that highlight the stories of CCSF students and faculty finding their passion and changing their lives.
Please watch and share these wonderful videos that show just what is at stake should the proposed cuts go through. Heartbeat of City College – Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3.
