John,

It’s officially Black History Month, a time to uplift and honor the stories of Black Americans, grapple with the systemic inequity and racism that persists in our country, and reflect on the year-round changes we can make in our own lives to support Black communities.

It’s also a time to revere the sacrifices Black Americans have made throughout our country’s history to secure basic rights – among them freedom, the right to vote, and the end of segregation, to name a few.

The layers of inequity that have persisted, however, continue to impact so much of our society today. From education to housing to healthcare to income, the sectors of American life that demand immediate and equity-focused action are many.

This month and every month that follows, we must commit to achieving racial equity. Black History Month should be dedicated to reflection, but it cannot stop there; it requires action.

May this February fuel daily advocacy in support of Black communities.

Best,
Matt
