Dear John,
I want to share some updates with you from Congress and across the country. Here are three things to know today:
-
This week, I released a statement condemning bomb threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Albany State University and Fort Valley State University. Within 24 hours, threats have been made against over a dozen Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the United States, including two in Middle and Southwest Georgia. I urge local, state, and federal authorities to work quickly to identify, apprehend, and bring to justice those responsible for these bomb threats. These threats are all the more disturbing because they are happening as we start Black History Month. HBCUs have played a tremendous role in the modern Civil Rights Movement, helping to foster the diversity upon which our nation prides itself. They continue to create leaders who enrich every aspect of American life. We cannot let terrorism threaten the vital educational mission and empowering roles these institutions play for African Americans.
-
I want to applaud the recent award of a $828,000 low-interest loan to Cuthbert, Georgia from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA). This award demonstrates how — working together — Georgia and the federal government can support vital projects that improve the quality of life for Middle and Southwest Georgia residents. Water treatment is a fundamental necessity but the costs to update systems can sometimes be prohibitive for smaller communities. Because of the major investments Congress made in our communities through the bipartisan infrastructure law last November, Georgia will have more federal resources in the months to come in order to commit to projects like this and help save residents from higher local taxes and utilities fees. These funds will be used to make major upgrades to the water sewer treatment plant.
-
Once again, I want to highlight the urgency of my re-election campaign. Over the last month we have seen two challengers announce their campaigns, with one of my opponents raising $100k in just 10 days. Election Day might seem like a long way away, but in reality, we are moving closer to the finish line at an alarmingly quick rate — and we don’t want to watch our opponent pass us. Please, help us keep pace by making a donation today.
Thank you for your continued support. Visit my website for further updates on my office and how I’m fighting for you.
Stay well, enjoy your weekend, and know that I am working hard for you every day.
Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
