Dear John,

In anticipation of our upcoming theme issue, Racism & Health, publishing on February 7, 2022, we are giving Health Affairs Today subscribers a sneak peek into the research and new content accompanying the issue release.
New Resource For Authors
Alongside the Racism & Health release, Health Affairs will publish an exclusive video interview with Harriet A. Washington—ethicist, writer, and author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present.

Aletha Maybank, Senior Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer at the American Medical Association, and Vabren Watts, Director of Equity at Health Affairs, interviewed Washington about the history of racism in medicine and research.

Health Affairs is also hosting events and publishing podcasts that enable authors and experts to dive deeper into the February issue’s research and discuss topics surrounding how racism impacts health.

One event accompanying the launch of our theme issue is a free virtual symposium, "Racism & Health" on Tuesday, February 8, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST. We are honored that Xavier Becerra, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, will address the group during the event.

Today in Health Affairs Forefront, David Kim and coauthors discuss how cost-effectiveness analyses can help determine how to best boost COVID-19 vaccinations rates.

Peter Neumann and Daniel Ollendorf argue that understanding the cost-effectiveness of health care interventions is critical for improving health system efficiency and optimizing population health.

In GrantWatch, the Peterson-Kaiser Family Foundation Health System Tracker's analyses thus far have found that the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant disruptions to longstanding trends in health outcomes, spending, and care.

Health Policy Research on Racism and Health

Racism is the reason for large, sustained health inequities in the United States.

The February 2022 issue of Health Affairs—as well as related content including a video interview, StoryMap, podcasts, and events—examines the historical context and linkages between structural racism and health outcomes.

The content not only focuses on the discussion of the topic with the latest scholarship, but includes forward-looking pieces to help shape the future research and policy agenda.
