Dear Friend,

Happy Black History Month! This Black History Month, there are a few things that I’m reflecting on and looking forward to.

Long before 2022 began, many have commented on the need for collective change as we take on year 3 of this pandemic. For me, Black History Month provides us with the opportunity to embrace this change. First, I think we must acknowledge that at this moment in time white supremacy and anti-Black racism continue to plague America. Look, for instance, at the bomb threats made to over a dozen HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities) across the country.

Next, I want non-Black people to make a commitment to Black young people: Commit to educating yourself on reproductive and racial justice, listen to what Black folks say that they need to flourish and thrive, and donate your time, money, and resources to supporting Black people.

Last, specifically to our Black URGE members and supporters, please use this month to find ways to celebrate joy. Black History Month is not just about struggle, it is a love letter dedicated to the beautiful, profound, and unique experiences of Blackness. That’s what I’m celebrating this month.

In Solidarity,

Kenyetta Whitfield, she/her
