Hey there --
18 years ago today, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his college dorm room. What started as a way to rate women online spiraled into something that is somehow even worse.
To celebrate Facebook’s birthday, we made a thread of graphics chronicling all of Facebook’s greatest “achievements.” From fueling disinformation to inciting genocide to fomenting coups, they’ve done it all. Check out all of Facebook’s greatest achievements over the past 18 years and share on social media if you use social media:
It’s been a wild birthday week for Facebook as their shares dropped 26% on Thursday after their quarterly earnings call. It was the largest one-day wipeout in U.S. corporate history.
But such a drop in stock value is only more reason for Facebook to double-down on their toxic business model of surveillance advertising. In its relentless pursuit of profit for shareholders, Facebook is likely to increase their exploitation of personal data for hyper-targeted ads to try to rebound their growth and profits.
We’re going to keep fighting to hold Facebook accountable. They may have tried to evade responsibility by changing their name to Meta, but we have the receipts of all of their societal harms. We’re grateful to have your support in this critical fight to rein in Big Tech.
Hope you have a nice weekend,
Nicole

We see the irony of asking you to take action on the same platforms we’re fighting to hold accountable, but they are… well… dominant. We have to reach people where they are in order to level the playing field -- and we’re ready to bring the fight right to their own platforms.
We're a small non-profit taking on Big Tech's toxic business model of surveillance advertising. Chip in to support our work:
