ADL Washington, D.C. Deputy Regional Director Meredith R. Weisel testifying during a Maryland state House Judiciary Committee Hearing.
A new year brings new legislative sessions across the country. In 2022, ADL is focused on combatting antisemitism, supporting democracy initiatives - such as voting rights, election integrity, immigration rights and education issues - and fighting extremism in line with our PROTECT Plan and Backspace Hate initiative.
ADL Washington, D.C. Deputy Regional Director, Meredith R. Weisel, is closely monitoring the Maryland and Virginia legislative sessions in our region, both of which began on January 12, 2022. Legislative priorities in those states include anti-swatting, domestic terrorism, hate crimes, voting rights and combatting antisemitism. You can check out additional resources and testimonies below:

Last week, ADL announced the inaugural class of Collaborative for Change fellows, Jews of Color who will receive up to $25,000 to counter bias and hate through film, research and other projects. ADL also blasted Amnesty International’s latest “effort to demonize Israel” – this time in the form of a report accusing Israel of being an apartheid state and engaging in ethnic cleansing.

On the popular ABC daytime TV show “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg inaccurately asserted that the Holocaust was not about race. ADL criticized this misinformed statement and called for Goldberg to get her facts right and apologize. She did so, and graciously invited our CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to come onto The View to talk about the racial underpinnings of the Holocaust and the problems caused by comments like Goldberg’s.
ADL has accepted her apology, and ABC News suspended Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks. Hopefully these next two weeks can be a time for introspection for her and healing for those who were hurt. In situations like this, we support a counsel culture, not a cancel culture.
