Today is Transit Equity Day—a day to celebrate public transit and how it has helped drive racial and social equity and advocacy over the years.
While we celebrate Transit Equity Day on Rosa Parks’ birthday, a civil rights icon, the reason for the day goes deeper than that. It is about reflecting on public transit’s history and future in advancing racial and social equity, expanding access to opportunity, and driving civic engagement all year-round.
Public transportation has a critical role to play in supporting a more equitable future for all Americans, regardless of where they live, how much money they make, or even whether they use public transit daily. From connecting low-income and disadvantaged communities to the larger economy to helping drive voter turnout to being a literal vehicle for change, public transit is helping support a more prosperous, politically active, and engaged society.
