Join the Cost of Living Protests on Saturday 12th February!
We have an extremely serious Cost of Living Crisis that is going to cause huge hardship for millions of households. Ofgem have announced an eye watering 54% rise in energy costs from April. On top of this we have growing inflation, food and petrol prices have risen, national insurance tax will rise from April. Plus there are the usual rises we see.
At the same time, oil and gas companies have announced billions in profits!
Since the Tory government came to power 12 years ago, we've seen our essential public services cut to the bone, rising inequality, skyrocketing housing costs and we've seen years of wage stagnation. This means that wages have not kept up with inflation. Despite this, the Bank of England boss, Andrew Bailey, is advising wage restraint. Unite General Secretary, Sharon Graham, has strongly hit back at this saying that workers didn’t cause inflation or the energy crisis so why should they pay for it? She goes on to say,
“Yet again workers are being asked to pay the price, this time for inflation and the energy crisis. Inflation has not been caused by workers. Why should they be expected to pay for the failures of the energy market and the total shambles of Government policy?
“Workers don’t need lectures from the Governor of the Bank of England on exercising pay restraint. Why is it that every time there is a crisis, rich men ask ordinary people to pay for it?
“Enough is enough, we will be demanding that employers who can pay, do pay. Let's be clear, pay restraint is nothing more than a call for a national pay cut.”
Collectively we must resist and fight back!
In a quote for The People's Assembly, Jeremy Corbyn, MP, says, "The cost of living crisis hurts us all, especially the most vulnerable in our society. We can no longer tinker round the edges - like today’s announcement from the Chancellor - we need radical change, with wealth taxes and public ownership of energy."
We agree with Jeremy, we need a wealth tax, we need public ownership of energy, we need affordable, renewable, low carbon energy (with good energy worker jobs), and we need urgent help for the millions now at serious risk of destitution. But more than that, we need radical political change that puts the needs of ordinary people first.
