Dear John,
Facebook is fueling a wave of violence in India. The platform is flooded with posts inciting racist mobs to vandalize mosques and lynch people in the street.
But rather than cracking down on such hateful lies, Facebook is suppressing an independent report that could expose the company's mismanagement of this crisis.
Facebook knows that if this report is released, it will face a blistering public backlash. The tech giant will be forced to crack down on the hate speech and disinformation that is fueling violence in India.
John, this is the moment to hold the company to account:
Tell Facebook to immediately release the full report
In 2020, after a massive civil society outcry, Facebook finally agreed to commission an independent Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) on India - which is Facebook's largest market with over 350 million users. They hired the famous law firm Foley Hoag to assess Facebook's role in spreading hate speech and incitement to violence on its platforms in India.
A year and a half later, the report hasn’t been released and researchers told the Wall Street Journal that Facebook is purposely delaying the release of the report.
This isn’t the first time that Facebook has fanned the flames of violence and genocide and then refused to take responsibility for it. Facebook is currently being sued for its role in the genocide of Rohingya people in Myanmar. And in the US, the company is under fire for enabling white supremacist groups to flourish.
Facebook needs to make the FULL report public:
Facebook: Release the full human rights report on India
With Facebook’s whistleblowers raising the alarm and politicians closing in - this is the moment to hold the company to account. You can make Facebook take accountability - starting with reining in hate and violence on its platform.
SumOfUs members like you pushed companies like Apple to publish their first ever human rights policy. Now, lets force Facebook to respect fundamental human rights once and for all.
