This week, InSight Crime published its annual homicide round-up – and it makes for rather grim reading. Violence worsened throughout Latin America and the Caribbean this past year, much of it driven by gangs, hired gunmen, and armed groups linked to organized crime. Making matters worse, officials appeared more concerned with manipulating figures for political purposes than accounting for death tolls and implementing meaningful strategies to reduce homicides.
Other notable reports from the region included a review of the challenges facing Honduras’ new security minister, who has previously taken on some of the country’s most infamous drug clans; a report on the how an increase in gasoline production in Venezuela is fueling black markets; and a look at how record drug seizures in Central America reveal which countries are feeding the cocaine pipeline to Europe.
