NCRC and Old National Announce $8.3 Billion Community Benefits Agreement to Strengthen Small Businesses, and Minority & Underserved Communities
Old National Bancorp and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition this week announced an $8.3 billion Community Growth Plan that builds on its long-standing commitment to support historically underserved and economically disadvantaged individuals, families and communities throughout its footprint. The plan was developed in collaboration with NCRC and its members and is subject to the closing of the First Midwest Bancorp, Inc. merger. [Read more]

NCRC Urges Senate to Confirm Bloom Raskin, Cook and Jefferson to Federal Reserve Board

NCRC 2020 Home Mortgage Report: Examining Shifts During COVID-19

In this paper, the National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s Research and Racial Economic Equity teams completed a broad and detailed analysis of 2020 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data. Our analysis revealed how the private mortgage lending market is failing to serve economically insecure households of color. This reinforces the racial divide in homeownership which props up the growing racial wealth divide. [Read more]

Does Perceived Socio-Economic Status Impact Access to Credit in the Small Business Arena?

Truist Shuttering Five More Branches in the Charlotte Area. Is Your Location Closing?

“There’s not really a sense of when banks are going to stop closing branches,” said Jason Richardson, director of research at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, told the Observer this month. “How many bank branches do you really need, if you’re a mid-range regional bank with 80 branches right now, and three quarters of your consumers are working online anyway?” [Read more]

This New Initiative Is Aiming to Create 3 Million New Black Homeowners

In 2019, there were about 6.45 million Black homeowners in the United States. This put the Black homeownership rate at 42 percent, as low as it was in 1970. Meanwhile, the rate of white homeownership increased to 73 percent percent, according to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition. [Read more]

When Banks Ask Loan Applicants About Their Arrest Record

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition reports that its evaluation of small business loan applications from a sample of seven banks in Washington, DC revealed that “some lenders discriminate against applicants who have been charged at any time in their lives with a criminal offense.”  A comment on the NCRC website proposes that these banks consider applicants to be “a lending risk for having been ‘ever charged’ with any crime, other than a minor vehicle violation, no matter when it occurred.”  It goes on to argue that “[t]his practice is not only factually suspect, it is discriminatory.”  The comment, written by Anneliese Lederer, the NCRC’s Director of Fair Lending, was subsequently republished in The American Banker.  [Read more]

DC Launches Pilot Program to Give Cash to New Parents and Pregnant People

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Thursday that the city is putting $1.5 million towards a pilot program to provide direct cash payments to 132 low-income new parents and pregnant people in wards 5, 7, and 8, offering each of them up to $900 a month for a year — with no conditions or expectations on how they should spend it. [Read more]

Private Management of Public Housing Led to Erosion of Tenants’ Rights, Report Finds

Proposal to Convert Vacant Retail Spots into Housing

In a region starved for new housing, the idea of repurposing under-utilized strip malls is something that Chris Kuschel, a principal planner at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, likes. “I think it has the potential to be transformative.” One of the biggest hurdles for creating new housing is a chronic shortage of land in eastern Massachusetts.
