Updated Messaging & New Social Media Shareables for Open Enrollment

Dear Allies,

With so much happening, we wanted to share some updated talking points for conversations with community members and the media about public charge and related threats. The current open enrollment period also presents a great opportunity for us all to help immigrants and their families understand their health insurance options. Read below for fresh messages and new social media shareables.

Updated Messaging on Public Charge & Related Threats

We have fresh talking points for media and for sharing with immigrants and their families. Below are some highlights. Click here for the full set of refreshed talking points.

Note: With the injunctions in place, we do not recommend that messaging focus on the content of the DHS public charge rule. Instead, we recommend talking about the current state of play and how these threats are part of Trump’s Invisible Wall.

For Media:
  • The invisible wall is real and public charge is just one large brick (other bricks are the Muslim and refugee bans, census citizenship question, health insurance proclamation…)
  • These attacks have nothing to do with immigration — they’re about race and class, designed to send one message: if you’re not white and you’re not wealthy, you’re not welcome
  • We won't stop fighting to protect immigrant families — and it’s a fight that, together, we can win
  • The real damage is being done by the “chilling effect” resulting from the Administration’s deliberate and coordinated efforts to terrorize families of color
  • That’s why we must tear down every brick in Trump’s invisible wall — only then can we truly protect immigrant families.
For Families:
  • It’s understandable that families are worried. Trump is trying to send the message that immigrant families don’t belong here.
  • We won't stop fighting for immigrant families — and it’s a fight that, together, we can win.
  • With tough fights on all fronts, Trump is trying to scare you into giving up the help that your children need to grow and learn and thrive
  • The best way to fight back is by knowing your rights and making the best decisions for you and your loved ones.
  • Together, we’re strong, and together, we can build a country where nobody has to live in fear and all families can thrive

Open Enrollment Social Media Shareables

Changes in immigration policy have created fear among immigrants and their families, causing eligible people to go without access to health care and other important supports. The Affordable Care Act’s marketplace open enrollment period (ends December 15) presents a great opportunity to fight back and make sure immigrants and their families understand what recent threats mean for them as they seek health coverage. Here are some sample tweets and social media infographics to help you spread the word!
  • The Trump Administration wants confusion and fear to win. Don't be fooled. #OpenEnrollment in #ACA marketplaces is happening NOW! Many immigrants and their families are eligible to enroll. http://bit.ly/2qKvKjJ #ProtectFamilies
