You’ve probably seen it all over the news: Donald Trump admitted he wanted Mike Pence to “overturn the election” on January 6th, even though he had no legal authority to do so. I try not to comment on Trump’s antics these days because I don’t want to give him any more attention, however this is one that’s important to disavow. This statement is what a dictator says, not a former President of the United States.

I really believe our democracy was closer to the brink than many people realize. Trump was so desperate to maintain his power as President he was ready to deny the will of the American people, and he incited violence at our Capital in the process.

Now, there are more QAnon candidates than ever running for office inspired by Trump’s lies and conspiracy theories. The Republicans are spending millions of dollars in competitive seats like ours to take control of Congress. We’re running in one of the closest races in the country, and I don’t think it’s out of line to say faith in our democracy is on the line.

John, the January 6th Committee that’s doing the investigation was only made possible because we have the majority. Thankfully a few Republicans like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger have joined Democrats to make sure there is a bipartisan account of what really happened.

But if Kevin McCarthy takes the gavel next year, I can already promise you he’ll shut down this investigation quicker than it even started in order to protect Donald Trump and those who were trying to subvert our democracy.
