As of last July, the total federal student loan debt topped $1.6 trillion. This isn’t even accounting for the billions of dollars in private student debt.
The student debt crisis is personal to me. I, like so many other young Americans, had to take out over $100,000 in loans to finish my education.
Students deserve the chance to start their life and build wealth without insurmountable debt. Our student debt crisis is just another example of a broken system that needs an urgent fix.
Student debt has gone up by more than 300% since 2003 — yet there has been little to no movement to help alleviate this gigantic burden on students. It’s why in my first term, I co-sponsored Bernie Sanders’ bill to make public four-year colleges and universities affordable for all — but we have to keep fighting.
College should be an available opportunity for anyone, regardless of income — and together we can make that a reality. But, it’s going to require a wave of support for our movement.
