For example, did you know that high blood pressure is often called the silent killer? You might not have symptoms, but it’s a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. As school nurses, we need to maintain our own heart health and educate our schools on the importance as well. The Centers for Disease Control Control and Prevention (CDC) has resources you can use to get the word out this month. And don't forget that tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 4 is National Wear Red Day®! BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights NASN Seeks Candidates for 2023-2025 Election Cycle During the next election cycle, NASN will seek candidates for the office of President-Elect 2023-2025, Secretary/Treasurer 2023-2025, and for membership on the Nominating Committee 2023-2025. NASN members may self-nominate by completing the full application packet described under the Applicant Responsibility section and submitting the packet to the chair of the nominating committee prior to March 15, 2022. LEARN MORE Paid advertisement Podcast: The Role of Nursing in the School on Child Trafficking In the latest JOSN podcast, Martha Dewey Bergren, editor of The Journal of School Nursing, interviews authors Megan Doiron and Jessica Peck to discuss their article, "The Role of Nursing in the School Setting to Lead Efforts to Impact Child Trafficking: An Integrative Review." LISTEN TO PODCAST AIM and NASN’s SLV efforts and the SLV Toolkit The Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) and NASN partnered together to disseminate information regarding SLVs, releasing a pair of reports detailing the role of SLVs during the COVID-19 pandemic and opportunities for strengthening their use for child and adolescent vaccination. These AIM/NASN reports, virtual symposium learning modules, and a multitude of other insightful SLV resources are compiled into a “School-Located Vaccination Clinics Toolkit” on AIM’s website under the “Resource Library” tab. This toolkit also includes access to the newly published NASN School Nurse January 2022 Special Supplement "School-Located Vaccination (SLV) Clinics in the Era of COVID-19," which is free to view digitally for the next year. Additionally, NASN developed a School-Located Vaccine Clinics: The Next School Nursing Priority webpage offering resources from NASN and NASN's partners. National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing According to the findings of a new, national survey by the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, nearly half of more than 5,600 nurse respondents reported that there is widespread racism in nursing. The Code of Ethics for Nurses obligates nurses to be allies and to advocate for and speak up against racism, discrimination, and injustice. The Commission urges all nurses across every health care setting and environment to join them in boldly confronting individual and systemic racism. New CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) The CDC released five MMWRs on Friday, January 21. They include the safety and efficacy of booster doses, updated interim clinical considerations for the Janssen vaccine, and more. VIEW MMWRS COVID-19 Resources for Educators Launched in March 2021, the Learning Policy Institute’s Resources for Reopening Schools Website is designed specifically for an education audience to serve as a hub of regularly updated information. All resources have brief, plain language summaries to help users quickly identify resources and information that will be most useful to them. COVID-19 Upcoming Events COVID Testing in K-12: A “How-To” Webinar Join the U.S. Department of Education for a webinar to help schools and districts start or strengthen their school-based COVID-19 testing program, with participants including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Rockefeller Foundation, and others. This webinar will be held on Friday, February 4, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. ET. There is an optional Q&A session for 20 minutes afterward for those with additional questions. Register for the webinar. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes Approximately 1.1 million children and adolescents are estimated to have Type 1 diabetes (T1D) globally, with an estimated 128,900 new cases annually (International Diabetes Foundation, 2019). Based on the most recent and highest quality evidence available, the purpose of this Guideline is to give the school nurse, working with students in grade pre-k-12 who have T1D, practice recommendations and strategies to provide quality care and improve the health and safety of the school-age child with T1D. Improving School Community & Student Health Webinar on FDA's Planned Tobacco Product Standards Join the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 2 to 3 p.m. ET for a live webinar titled “FDA’s Rulemaking Process and Planned Tobacco Product Standards to Prohibit Menthol as a Characterizing Flavor in Cigarettes and Flavors in Cigars.” Attendees will watch a presentation from FDA’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity, CTP’s Office of Health Communication and Education, and CTP’s Office of Regulations, followed by a question-and-answer session. Speakers will respond to some of the most commonly submitted stakeholder questions. FDA will respond only to questions submitted by Feb. 4.
