Poll Shows Hospital Owners Oppose Sale

How often do 82 percent of people agree on anything? An overwhelming majority of New Hanover County residents agree on one thing - including Republicans, Democrats, unaffiliated voters, young, old, black, white, all incomes and all genders.

The subject: the proposed sale of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, which is owned by New Hanover County.  The response: don’t do it, because healthcare costs will increase and quality will decrease.  And if you do, we will vote against office-holders who supported the sale.

Here are the key results: 87% were aware of the proposed sale. If NHRMC is sold 74% expect the cost of healthcare to increase and 64% expect the quality of care to decrease. A whopping 82% are opposed to selling the hospital to a for-profit organization.  65% would vote against politicians who supported the sale.  These are the findings of Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh-based firm which conducted a poll of 600 New Hanover County voters on November 7th and 8th.

It should be noted that the results show a bipartisan consensus. More Republicans were polled than Democrats and the age and race breakdown roughly resembles proportions found in the voting pool for a typical election.

The PPP report can be viewed here. The poll was commissioned by the New Hanover County Democratic Party.

Best Regards,

Richard Poole, Chair
