Dear John, Approximately 5 million English Learners (ELs) are enrolled in public schools in the United States, making up roughly 10 percent of all K-12 students. Public schools use several tools to measure the performance of these students, who come from many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including annual English language proficiency assessments. In a new easy-to-use guide for the parents of ELs and other community members, the Migration Policy Institute’s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy provides an overview of the standardized tests that ELs have to take, what they aim to measure, and why this is important for these students and their families. The guide also explains how the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning have changed testing procedures, as well as offers information on which specific exams are offered in each U.S. state. The guide is accompanied by a glossary of key terms used frequently in conversations about K-12 education and ELs. Read the guide and glossary, which are available in English and Spanish.
