Dear John, Approximately 5 million English Learners (ELs) are enrolled in public schools in the United States, making up roughly 10 percent of all K-12 students. Public schools use several tools to measure the performance of these students, who come from many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including annual English language proficiency assessments. The guide is accompanied by a glossary of key terms used frequently in conversations about K-12 education and ELs. Read the guide and glossary, which are available in English and Spanish. And for more of the Center’s research on K-12 and English Learners, see: www.migrationpolicy.org/topics/k-12-education. With thanks for your interest in our work, ### The Migration Policy Institute is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank in Washington, D.C. dedicated to analysis of the movement of people worldwide.
