Dear
SPUC supporter,
We wrote to you last week asking you to contact your MP about the DIY abortions policy. We told you that BPAS and other abortion providers are campaigning hard to keep this reckless and deadly policy in place.

Now, they have stepped up the pressure. BPAS tweeted ([link removed]) yesterday to welcome the news that “the Government will not revoke permission for at-home early medical abortion”. However, when we contacted the Department of Health and Social Care, we got this response:
Abortion lobbyists are clearly trying to bounce the Government into making the decision they want, before the results of the consultation are even announced.

Please urgently write to your MP, asking him/her to lobby Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and Maggie Throup, Minister for Vaccines and Public Health. Key points to make are:
* Politicians promised that this measure would be temporary.
* This emergency measure was imposed with no Parliamentary scrutiny. It would be completely undemocratic to extend it without even releasing the results of the public consultation, and without consulting Parliament. Abortion providers should not be permitted to unilaterally set abortion law.
* Freedom of Information responses ([link removed]) from NHS Trusts in England show that 5.9% of women using medical abortion are subsequently treated in hospital for complications arising from an incomplete abortion
* Data from FOI requests to NHS Ambulance Services indicate that on average 36 women make 999 calls every month seeking medical assistance for complications arising from the taking of abortion pills
* The policy is impossible to regulate – a mystery client investigation found that fake aliases were able to obtain pills without identity checks or having to provide NHS numbers

You can find more evidence of the dangers of the policy in SPUC’s Case Against DIY abortions briefing ([link removed]) , and on the Care for Women website ([link removed]) .

You can find your MP’s contact details here ([link removed]) .

We need to fight back NOW and make politicians keep their promise that this would be a temporary measure.

Yours in life
Alithea Williams
Public Policy Manager
