John,
Generations of Americans have fought and died for the right to vote — the right to fulfill the promise of this country by having their voices heard in our government.
And 152 years ago today, the 15th Amendment extended that right to Black men and men of any race.
It failed to grant suffrage to women, though, and discriminatory laws at the state level continued to systematically prevent Black men from casting a ballot.
The fight for voting rights would continue through the women’s suffrage movement of the early 20th century and the civil rights movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s. We have come a long way in the last century.
But now, the right to vote is under attack again, by radical Republicans determined to take us backward and hold onto power at any cost. They’re passing legislation specifically aimed at decreasing voter participation — like restrictive voter ID laws and prohibitions on mail-in voting — and using ultra-partisan gerrymandering tactics to make sure that some folks’ votes count less than others.
We can’t stand for it, John, not after coming so far.
