SBA SUCCESS STORY
DURECIA MOORER, MANAGING PARTNER AND CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER
ABCD & COMPANY
Durecia Moorer of ABCD & Company
?
*The ABCDs of SBA Assistance*
As the first woman in her family to own a small business (all the business owners in her family had been male until she came along), Durecia Moorer was born to make a name for herself. Having graduated from Howard University, she and her three best friends created a management consulting firm: ABCD & Company. Moorer had developed a passion for helping companies launch, scale, and grow, but after several years she and her partners realized the marketing component of their consulting work proved to be the most profitable aspect of the company. ABCD & Company helps other organizations become better at what they do by heightening their strategic engagement with stakeholders. It?s one thing to make an emotional connection with your customers through eye-catching materials and exciting events ? doing so in a way that makes sense for the company?s growth; the bottom line is another thing altogether. ABCD & Company had kept an eye on both of these goals for its many clients, a list that now includes companies in healthcare, hospitality, and finance. But the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly changed the playing field for many Business to Business (B2B) firms like ABCD & Company. Despite its certification as a Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB), the company found itself struggling to stay afloat. Durecia recalls asking herself, ?What am I going to do when we?re in a pandemic and events are canceled??
Fortunately, Durecia had recently completed Emerging Leaders, an SBA-sponsored executive training program that includes about 100 hours of classroom time over several weeks. The advanced business skills and contacts she acquired through the program served her well, as she was able to adjust her operations to the changing environment. ?The Emerging Leaders program required us to create a strategic plan, which gave us a framework to pivot during the pandemic,? Durecia said. She added, ?My success is largely attributed to what I learned in the Emerging Leaders program. The help was instrumental and enabled us to pivot in a way that brought continuity to our operations.?
If business growth during a global health crisis is any indication of a company?s resilience, then ABCD & Company has much to celebrate. They recently expanded their team to 15 employees. The survival of the firm, a minority- and woman-owned small business, means that Durecia gets to continue pursuing her dream of helping other small businesses achieve similar levels of success. Brava, Durecia!
