-- Justice Kagan
What I didn't expect was Justice Kagan calling out her fellow justices for undermining our democracy. In her dissenting opinion on the partisan gerrymandering case, Justice Kagan reminded us that the Court's role is to defend the foundations of our government -- none more important than free and fair elections.
This Fourth of July is a good time to reflect on how our country was founded on the idea that the government derives its power from the people and that every voice should have fair representation. One person. One vote. And while it has been a work in progress to see that fully realized, one thing remains true -- the progress we've made, from women's suffrage to passing the Voting Rights Act, was always a result of everyday people organizing for change.
We're asking you to join this movement and sign the All On The Line Citizen Commitment to confirm that you believe we need independent, non-partisan, fair redistricting that will end map manipulation.
By signing this pledge, you're committing to only support candidates and elected officials who want fair districts that accurately reflect our communities and to hold politicians accountable to a fair redistricting process in 2021.
Add your name to the thousands of supporters in all 50 states who have signed the AOTL Citizen Commitment!
The Supreme Court may have refused to rein in partisan gerrymandering, but that does not mean we need to accept gerrymandered districts. We can fight back -- our democracy depends on it.
Thanks for all that you do,
Shehn Datta
