Hey John,
It's Black History Month -- here are some history-making Run for Something alums we're celebrating:
-
Amber Sellers: first Black woman on the Lawrence, KS City Commission
-
Erica Spann: first African American woman elected to the Ayer-Shirley School Board, MA
-
Christian D. Menefee: first African American and youngest person to serve as county attorney in Harris County, TX
-
Elaissia Sears: the youngest person elected into state office and one of just three African American women in Arizona history to hold the position of Justice of the Peace
-
Hamdi Mohamed: first Black woman commissioner elected to the Port of Seattle, WA
We're so proud of the change these alums represent and the work they're doing -- for them to simply run in the first place was hard enough! Historically, party gatekeepers and institutions didn’t recruit Black people to run all that often because they thought Black leaders were "risky" bets; they just didn't think Black candidates could raise the money needed to win.
We're trying to change that. This Black History Month, we're making it easy to support Black young progressives that we've endorsed.
Split a $5 or more donation between 14 of our Black candidates who are running this year and Run for Something.
We'll be updating this page as we endorse more candidates for 2022 -- so bookmark it, and check back regularly!
Let's do this,
Run for Something
Run for Something is a grassroots-powered organization that recruits and empowers young progressives running for local office, with the goal of winning permanent power for decades to come. We've elected 600 diverse, young progressives to power by relying on support from grassroots donors pitching in a little to create big change. Please chip in now to help our candidates continue running and winning.
