Friend, join me in celebrating Black History Month.
From culture, to politics, to the arts – and so much more – African
Americans have made phenomenal contributions to our country, and each
February is joyfully dedicated to recognizing, lifting up, and honoring
this history.
2022 promises to mark another historic milestone: the approaching
nomination of the first Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. But as we
lean into this impending victory, we are also tasked with continuing the
battle against the Far Right’s efforts to whitewash our history and
suppress our voices with some of the most racist, anti-voter,
anti-education campaigns we’ve seen in decades.
Dozens of states have passed laws that restrict Black and brown voters’
rights, and the Right’s renewed zeal for book-banning over the past year
has focused on works with racial, gender, or LGBTQ-related themes, many of
them revered classics and historical works. These are real efforts to
block teachings about both the contributions of African Americans and
other marginalized groups and the legacy of racism and hatred that is
baked into many of our country’s institutions.
Our work to eradicate systemic oppression and make this country a place
where all people have equal opportunity for justice and happiness cannot
succeed if the Far Right erases the truth of our past and our present.
[ [link removed] ]Please help make sure your state is protecting the truth of our
history by writing an email to your local or state school board members
today! >>
We’ll give you a sample email as a starting point and direct you to where
you can find your local or state email contacts. It should take you no
more than 5 minutes to complete, and your input could make a big
difference as school boards across the country take on these critical
challenges. [ [link removed] ]And when you have finished sending your email, make sure to
let us know!
Thank you for taking action to help us stop the Far Right’s campaign
against truth and history in your state. Local action is the best way
to cut off their influence at the source.
Despite these far-right attempts to discredit our hard-fought
contributions of the past, present, and our promising future, we will not
let them dampen our celebration. Black history is American history, our
future is America’s future, and I cannot wait to see where we will go
next.
With victories on the horizon and a growing movement dedicated to the
protection of every American’s fundamental right to a voice in our
democracy, we know that our future will be as rich as our past – and even
brighter.
Thank you again,
– Ben Jealous, President
