We have an opportunity right now to totally rewrite a pro-industry policy put in place by President Trump that left our drinking water and waterways at risk. 

 

The “Dirty Water Rule” allowed big corporations to pollute millions of miles of streams. It was flat out illegal, and thankfully was thrown out by a federal court. 

 

The Biden administration is starting from scratch, and is allowing the public to weigh in on what kind of waterways should be protected from unchecked pollution.

 

We believe that everyone deserves clean drinking water, and unless we protect the smallest streams that feed our lakes, rivers, and reservoirs from toxic pollution, our drinking water is at risk of contamination. This is our opportunity to make sure that the Biden administration gets it right and puts the strongest protections for our waterways in place, and the more public comments they receive the better. Will you submit a public comment urging public officials to ensure that a finalized definition is rooted in science, considers environmental justice interests, and factors in climate change implications? 

Let's be clear: Clean water is a basic human right. But communities of color and low-income families already disproportionately suffer from pollution and contaminated drinking water. The “Dirty Water Rule” made these existing inequalities worse by letting corporate polluters get away with contaminating drinking water sources and destroying the wetlands that filter pollution and guard against storms, flooding, and sea level rise.

 

Clean water is also a powerful economic resource. Small businesses like local farms, craft breweries, and mom-and-pop restaurants depend on clean water if they’re going to thrive. If we want to keep Pennsylvania families healthy and grow our economy, the last thing we should do is weaken protections for our waterways.

 

By acting quickly to develop a stronger, more protective standard to protect all our waters, the Biden administration can uphold their climate commitments and stand up for vulnerable communities nationwide. Submit a comment today urging public officials to ensure the definition of WOTUS is rooted in science, environmental justice, and climate change solutions.
