Manny Cortez spent almost 30 years bettering his community and serving his neighbors as their voice as a Clark County commissioner and as head of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Nobody, and I mean nobody, cared more about helping others than my dad.
As a little girl, up on Dad’s shoulders or walking alongside him holding onto his pinky because his hands were too big, I saw what service meant up close: He always lent an ear, opened his heart and took on powerful interests to solve the problems our neighbors faced.
That deep commitment to helping others and that fearlessness on behalf of his community is what inspired me to pursue a life in public service. I believe those values are at the core of what the Democratic Party is about, and I’m proud to continue his fight in the Senate.
But right now, a McConnell-backed, Trump-endorsed radical is 3 points ahead of me in the polls. Experts from CNN to Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight are warning that my race is a toss-up and that I could lose.
But what they don’t understand is that I’m not afraid of this fight. I watched my dad fight and win throughout his life for a community that too many wrote off, and with your help, that’s exactly what I’m going to do in this election.
