John, Joe Manchin isn’t interested in passing any of our progressive priorities. And the Squad knew it from the very beginning. Here’s Manchin joking about obstructing progressive policies in Build Back Better yesterday:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn’t like Manchin’s apathy in the face of millions who need Democrats to act. Here’s her response:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley all urged Democrats to make sure Manchin couldn’t pass his bipartisan infrastructure bill WITHOUT also passing Build Back Better. The Squad even voted against the establishment. But the corporate Democratic Party passed the infrastructure bill anyways. And now the core social and economic reforms of the Democratic agenda are (still) being blocked by Manchin.

Last year, corporate Democrats joined with Republicans to put climate action, universal pre-K, paid leave, and Medicare expansion at risk. The Squad voted against the political establishment, and for good reason.

The Squad was right not to trust corporate Democrats like Joe Manchin. Corporate Democrats promised the people they would pass Build Back Better if Congress just passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill first. Now, Manchin simply sneers at Build Back Better.

When it comes down to it, corporate Democrats do not want to pass popular progressive policies. It’s on the Justice Democrats in Congress — and the grassroots movement behind them — to hold the line in the fight for working people.
