Folks,

February is Black History Month – a time dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the contributions that Black Americans have made in our country. But it’s also about recognizing the inequality that is still rooted in our society – from environmental racism to housing inequality and disparate healthcare outcomes.

I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot of Republicans making statements about celebrating Black History Month in the coming days. But I want to be clear that actions speak much louder than words.

Their statements quoting the late Congressman John Lewis or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. isn’t worth the paper it’s written on if they continue to obstruct legislation to protect and expand the right to vote and encourage local and state legislators to ban Critical Race Theory from being taught in schools.

Voter suppression laws are purposefully designed to impede Black and Brown folks from voting, and denying students the right to learn about the truth of America’s racist institutions is erasure of Black history.

I will continue fighting for voting protections and accurate education in our schools this month and every month.

In solidarity,
Sean
