John,
Today, I want to talk about the rules of the road. Fair warning — this is a bit of a long story, but I’m asking you to bear with me.
In March 2020, Donald Payne Jr.'s car got a parking ticket—and he got pretty mad.
Payne Jr. argued with the officer—and then the officer “mysteriously” faced alleged retaliation at work.
I wouldn't blame you if you thought this was far-fetched! But political retaliation is business as usual in the Essex County Sheriff's Office. This is the same Sheriff's office that is responsible for the Essex County Jail, which is known for horrible conditions for both prisoners and ICE detainees.
This is the same Sheriff Donald Payne Jr. took money from last quarter.
And while we're talking about intimidation, corruption, and mismanagement, some of you may remember that my Mom caught some folks snooping around my driveway trying to take a picture of our cars. We fully suspect this was a machine operative trying to dig up dirt.
So let's talk about my car, John. I drive an American-made, union-made 2016 red Ford Mustang. Her name is Dracarys. This is my first car—I bought it when I was 29 and make monthly payments on the loan like MILLIONS of others.
Like everything I've accomplished—law school, working in the U.S. Senate and the N.J Legislature, and running for Congress—I worked hard to buy Dracarys. And like so many of you, I love my car.
But in New Jersey, the machine doesn't reward people who work hard and do their jobs. Just look at what happened to the officer who wrote an appropriate ticket.
They reward loyalty and corruption.
It's time to put a stop to this and elect a real progressive Congresswoman — a Congresswoman who will fight for us and NEVER retaliate over a parking ticket. I need your help to make progressive values the new rules of the road in NJ. Click here to chip in $27 — or whatever you can — today. [[link removed]]
Thank you for standing with me.
