Legislative Session Newsletter: February 2, 2022
What Happened Last Week
Last Monday, session ramped up again after budget hearings. And on Tuesday, Erick dropped legislation ( HB 1003 [[link removed]] ) to address contract disputes between insurance companies and hospital systems.
[link removed] [[link removed]]On Wednesday, Erick attended a Cobb delegation meeting to discuss the County Board of Commissioners maps and the Board of Education maps. Not a single member of the Republican House delegation showed up to the meeting .
Erick and his Democratic colleagues have worked to make this process fair and transparent. They've asked for feedback from House Republicans, but they've been unwilling to collaborate. Instead, they introduced their own Cobb School Board map, going directly against House rules on local redistricting and jeopardizing Cobb's fair representation.

“Some will accuse me of playing the race card, but that’s just the default for uncomfortable facts. The uncomfortable facts are that we should let everyone vote. I’m convinced that all three cities that are moving through the process will have a chance to vote on their destiny in the coming months. But the one community that won’t, is the only one that is overwhelmingly minority and less affluent. […]
So, for these reasons I will be voting No and I respectfully ask the sponsor to ask this vote be delayed so that we can vote on all 4 at one time.”
