Dear John,

We are on the hunt for West Virginians who have the least and give the most… and we could use your help.

In every West Virginia town, there’s someone you can go to for help, no matter who you are. These folks don’t care about who your daddy was or what trouble you’re in. They don’t answer to politicians or landlords or lawyers. They don’t answer to that one family who owns half the town; they just want to help. Their cell phone is on all hours of the day. And if they don’t answer, they’ll always call you back.

We call these people Hometown Heroes.

West Virginia Can’t Wait has already raised $50,000 to support 25 Hometown Heroes. Each Hometown Hero will receive a $2000 grant to support their work, and they will also get organizer training, fundraising support, media attention (if they want it), and a statewide community of support and mutual aid.

We are fighting for a people’s government in West Virginia. This is where it starts. We have to back the people who STAND UP when government FALLS DOWN.

These Hometown Heroes may become our future mayors, legislators, pastors, school board members, and institution leaders. But they are also our CURRENT recovery coaches, teachers, harm reductionists, mamaws, first responders. They need our help now.

Can you start a monthly donation of $5 today? Can you donate $200? Can you forward this to someone else who might help?

More than 100 brilliant, brave heroes have been nominated:

  • Unhoused people distributing food and medicine.
  • People in recovery saving lives.
  • Veterans helping veterans.
  • People with criminal records building community.

And on, and on.

Right now we can only afford to award 25 of them. It’s not enough. We’d love your help. You can make a donation at the links above or contact me directly if you’d like to learn more, or discuss making a larger contribution.

Best wishes,

Stephen, on behalf of the Hometown Heroes team (Lill, Vanessa, Joanna, Jay, Loretta, Rebecca, Ash, Brendan, and Brittney)
