Happy Black History Month, folks.

While February is a time to celebrate and honor Black leaders and activists who have built and shaped our country from the ground up, this month also serves as a reminder of our commitment to uplifting Black voices and fighting for justice and equality.

Let me be clear: Michigan history is Black history and American history is Black history.

In Congress, I’m fighting to rectify the systemic racism ingrained in our institutions. This means addressing housing and healthcare inequalities, eliminating voter suppression policies that disproportionately affect Black voters, combating environmental racism, and so much more.

I hope you will join me in celebrating Black History Month by taking action. One way I do my part is by supporting Black-owned businesses whenever I can. Last week, I visited a few in Madison Heights – Big Bo’s Grill and the 24th Cheesecakerie – which I now consider two of my new favorites!

We still have so much work to right the wrongs of our history, but we can never stop fighting for the promise of equality on which our nation was founded.
