Calling all potential 2019 Executive Board Members & Caucus Chairs!
The Arlington Young Democrats will be holding the 2019 Executive Board elections on Wednesday, November 20th at NRECA (4301 Wilson Boulevard). The elections will serve in lieu of our November monthly meeting.
Elections will be held for the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Community Service Director, Campaign Director, Outreach Director, Membership Director, and Democratic Party Rep. Descriptions of each position can be found at the end of this email.
In order to run and cast your ballot in the AYD 2019 Executive Board elections, you must be a dues paying member. Renew your membership and pay your dues here. Should you like to request to have membership dues waived due to financial hardship, contact Michael Hemminger at [email protected].
In order to run, you must submit a candidate statement by Friday, November 15th at 5:00 PM. Please email your candidate statement directly to Emma Vitale at [email protected].
Candidate statements for President should be 500 words or less. Candidate statements for all other elected positions should be 250 words or less. Candidate statements will be sent to our members via email on November 16th. Please note that you must be a dues paying member of AYD to run for office.
If you are unable to attend on November 20th, you can vote by absentee ballot. To request an absentee ballot, submit a request here. Absentee voting begins on November 16th and ends on November 19th. Please remember that you must be a dues paying member in order to vote in our elections and that we will be checking your name against our membership list on election night.
In sum:
- November 15th: Candidate statements must be submitted by 5 PM
- November 16th: Candidate statements released and absentee voting begins
- November 19th: Absentee voting ends
- November 20th: 2019 E-Board Elections at 7 PM
Position Descriptions
President:
Presides over meetings of the Executive Committee and the general membership. Exercises general managerial tasks with respect to the operation of the organization. Establishes and terminates special committees as needed, appoints a chair to such special committees, and shall be notified of each committee meeting. Serves as official liaison to the Arlington County Democratic Committee, of which they are a voting member of the Steering Committee. Appoints and removes Finance Director and Publicity Director, subject to the approval of a majority of the elected AYD Officers.
Vice President:
Presides over the organization in the absence of the President. Oversees the schedule and the presentations of meetings of the general membership and programs outside of regular general membership meetings. Appoints and removes Programming Director and Digital Director, subject to the approval of a majority of the elected AYD’s Officers. Assists and supports the President with leadership of the organization as needed, and fills gaps where required.
Secretary:
Prepares and disseminates a written report of meetings of the Executive Committee and the general membership. Prepares and disseminates AYD weekly membership newsletter.
Treasurer:
Drafts proposed AYD yearly budget. Establishes procedures to handle disbursements and expenditures. Tracks and reports all receipts and disbursements. Maintains all financial records. Prepares filing reports to the State Board of Elections. Ensures financial records are open to inspection by any active Member at any reasonable time.
Community Service Director:
Coordinates outreach and service to volunteer and charitable organizations. Supports planning for any AYD fundraiser with a charity partner by proposing charity partners, managing the relationship with that partner, and other duties as needed.
Campaign Director:
Oversees political activity of the organization, including voter registration. Coordinates efforts with the campaigns of local, state, and federal Democratic candidates. Prepares AYD general election campaign strategy and makes decisions about where to allocate limited campaign resources to have the greatest impact on targeted races in Arlington and beyond.
Outreach Director:
Organizes outreach to people and organizations in order to fulfill the objectives of AYD. Supervises the activities of caucuses created pursuant to Article VI, Section 3 of the AYD constitution.Appoints and removes caucus chairs, subject to the approval of a majority of the elected AYD Officers.
Membership Director: Oversees membership list and ensures it is up to date and accurate. Plans and coordinates activities for recruitment, retention, and renewal of members, including new member events and other opportunities for member involvement. Appoints, oversees, and works with the Recruitment and Retention Directors.
Democratic Party Rep:
Serves as official liaison to the Arlington County Democratic Committee, of which they are a voting member of the Steering Committee, and is primary point of contact with the local Party. Coordinates scheduling and joint priorities with local Party, and manages relationships with other recognized Democratic organizations. Manages the AYD resolution process.
