Black history is American history.

It’s so important that we celebrate and center Black history in the American experience — not just during Black History Month but every day of the year — because Black accomplishment and representation has shaped our country for centuries.

That is why I am so excited to introduce the African American History Act in the Senate. Together with Congressman Jamaal Bowman, we’re advocating for investments to make the story of Black people in America more accessible to teachers, educators, and students, because this is a crucial part of the story of America.

As we celebrate the leaders, innovators, humanitarians, authors, scientists and more whose identities continue to inspire not just Black Americans but all of us, we must also take action to ensure that our history is not whitewashed or overlooked in the face of political pressure.This month, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Black achievement and Black joy as well as recommitting to our work propelling anti-racist values and fighting systemic injustices against Black Americans. February is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of Black Americans while pushing our country to live up to its highest ideals.

Black Americans are still making history — there’s still so much progress to be made, but I know we can make it there together.

In the words of former First Lady Michelle Obama, “History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.” Let us be courageous this month and lead with hope while we celebrate the accomplishments of Black Americans and fight for a better tomorrow.
